After two and half years Jo Bedu’s flagship store in Amman, Jordan is finally wearing its true identity.

Back in 2009, Meesh and Tamer rented out a small store in Weibdeh and started working it themselves after their day jobs with no money, no contractors, nothing. Their family and friends even joined them one Friday for a Paint and BBQ Day and gave the store its yellow soul. After few months of toiling and toiling Jo Bedu opened its first standalone store front on June 15th 2009.

Over the next two years Jo Bedu expanded its product line and staff size. It was clear that the original store was not equipped to accommodate the growth. It was time to evolve.
Tamer, Meesh, Farah Budeiri, Khaled Budieri, and Hadi Alaeddin took all the notes from the two years experience and designed an ultra functional simple store that enhances the tribe’s experience at their Jo Bedu home.

Looking back at the renovation journey it was no easy ride. Initially it was supposed to be a 3 week project but it ended up taking a bit over two months. We had to deal with everything from lying contractors, tilted walls, cash shortage, things that don’t fit, and many many sleepless nights.
We were so frustrated that we had to open a makeshift store across the street a month into the project! video
But that’s all done now. Jo Bedu’s flagship store is here for everyone to enjoy and we are super excited for you to see it.

A special thanks goes to Books@Cafe for lending us the makeshift store! We apologize to the neighbors for over two months of ruckus.

Growing up in the Arab world in the 80’s and 90’s meant awesome Arabic dubbed Japanese cartoons. Before satellite television, sms and internet it was these foreign cartoons that connected us all. From Mauritania to Yemen everyone wept when Earth didn’t need Grendizer anymore after the defeat of the evil Vega. We learnt strength through unity from Kamal and Lamees. Ragheef Al 3ajeeb showed us just how powerful pita bread is. Audiences cheered Captain Majed all the way to the world cup. Jongar’s death was mourned by all. All these memories and countless more glued generations to the tele.
Jo Bedu commissioned Hadi Alaeddin, Mothanna Hussein, Tamer AlMasri and Lutfi Zayed to showcase their take on this phenomena and the Japanese Childhood collection came to life:

We’re always hiring awesome people to join the Jo Bedu sales team and the CVs keep coming. This time around we wanted to spice things up and make a low budget “reality TV show” out of it and here it is: Jo Bedu’s Wathafuk Challenge .

We chose 5 totally different contestants out of the mounds of CVs and put them on a five day challenge. Every day we exposed them to key elements of the job and examined how they performed.

It was all filmed and aired on Jo Bedu TV. We’ve complied them all for you right here so enjoy the show!

Intro : Tamer and Meesh give a rundown of how its gonna play out.

Day 1: Orientation: Say hello to our 5 awesome contestants: Sophie, Mohammad, Mohannad, Hamxa and Dima!

Day 2: Cleanliness Cleanliness Cleanliness A clean store is a happy store.

Day 3: Customer Comes First: We love our tribe and want to make sure they always feel at home at the Jo Bedu Store.

Day 4: Working the System: Mothanna Hussein and Mohammad Zakaria put the contestants through the “Speedy Gonzales Checkout Challenge”

Day 5: Back to where it all started…: It was Friday, which also means… SOUK JARA! JARA is an important part of Jo Bedu’s culture. It’s where it all started nearly five years ago. Its also the ultimate challenge: arriving at the warehouse at 8am, taking the inventory to JARA, setting up the booth, helping out customers, working under the scorching sun, taking down the booth and returning the inventory back to where it came from… by 11pm, trust us, you’re beat.

Judgement Day : Its all fun and play until you get down to the elimination round. Meesh and Tamer bring the contestants to “the boardroom” and deliver the final word…

Congrats to the winners and best of luck to the rest!

Stay tuned for more challenges, videos and random fun

4 Years ago today Jo Bedu made its first appearance at JARA with its first line of t-shirts: I Survived Mansaf, Got Jameed?, Save the Dead Sea, Khishneh Willa Na3meh, Pimp Basha and the Camel Crossing t-shirt.

Michael Makdah and Tamer AlMasri had spent the night before anxiously preparing the inventory and packing up for the big day. The months-long preparations paid off that JARA day when scores of people passed by the booth laughing and grabbing their friends to come see Jo Bedu.

4 years later and 40 something designs more on the shelves, Jo Bedu is glad to continue to bring you more goodies through the awesome works of Arab designers.

Cheers!
